Daily Show: Christopher Hitchens interview

In this august 25th, 2005 episode of the Daily Show, Jon Stewart picked the brain of Christopher Hitchens. The interview was very good. Hitchens is a right wing supporter of the war but started out as a left wing socialist. He was there to promote his new book "Thomas Jefferson : Author of America". However the interview quickly moved to politics and his position supporting the war. I thought it was an excellent interview.

Podcast: History of Me

It's most likely drivel. One night a week and a half ago I sat down with the recorder and reminisced about the follies and misadventures of youth. I recalled most of the dark moments. Topics included getting tossed out of college, drunk driving and a slew of romantic and/or sexual encounters. It was as if the minidisc recorder was a confessional. It felt good to expunge that kopf-schiesse. Then I touched up the dialog a bit and put some music in the background. So, this may be podcast gold or crap. Frankly, I haven't figured out the difference yet. Enjoy.

Bryce Renderings

I've gotten into Bryce. I've made a few little renderings. Most are 3 to 10 seconds. Some of them I've included some music and credits.

The Dark Backward: (VHS Rip)

Senior Recital 2005

Elizabeth Johnson (my sister), a flutist from Minneapolis attending college at Hope College in Holland, Michican gave an encore performance of her senior recital. It was held in the evening of January ?, 2005 at Salem Covenant Church in New Brighton, MN. We have an audio CD and DVD available. The video (and its audio) were recorded with a DV Samsung camcorder. The audio CD was recorded seperately with a minidisc recorder (much higher fidelity).

A compressed version can be viewed here (wmv 138Mb).
The music was also recorded at high fidelity and available as mp3s here (13 tracks, 54.5Mb in total

The Dark Backward: (VHS Rip) The Dark Backward was a dark comedy released in 1991. Written and directed by Adam Rifkin who later directed Small Soldiers, the movie got horrible reviews. Rolling Stone said he "conjured up a new low in cinematic ineptitude". Ken Hanke of Mountain Xpress said it was "Really strange. Really bad". However, Mike McGranaghan, reviewer at Aisle Seat put it more succicently "One word: crap". But as much as the professional critics trashed the movie about a garbage men into eating dog poop and having sex with 700 pound women, the movie gained a cult following. Amazon.com's users give it 4/5 stars claiming "is arguably Rifkin's best film, not having directed anything since to equal it." As one Amazon reviewer said "just sit back, relax, and plan on seeing one of the oddest and darkly comedic films you will ever see".

My Nifty Light Switch One morning in January of this year (2005), I found the light switch in my bedroom, which was acting up, was completely toast. The night before it wouldn't shut off. After banging on it a few times, it finally turned off, never to work again. I drove down to Home Depot that day and picked up a new light switch. Not content with something normal, I splurged on a touch panel one. And, because I'm an incurable geek, I had to make a movie about it.

They Might Be Giants (7/9/04) The only band of my pre-high school years that I still love is They Might Be Giants. I have a large collection of their works, including their new stuff which is mostly kids albums. (Though with the release of The Spine, they are going back to normal adult albums). I discovered they were playing at First Avenue and immediately got tickets. Here is a short film of my experience at the show (and their opening acts).

July 4th, 2004 I was invited to a party on July 4th out at Joe's cousins house. He lives out in the boonies north of Minneapolis. The house was off the main road (on Central Ave, way north of the cities) and had one neighbor bordering a large field. On the other side of his house away from the road sharing his driveway was his uncles house. I didn't know how many where there but by the time we arrived, several seperate cookouts were wrapping up and people had gathered into seperate intermingling circles. It was a very warm crowd with any number of people offering you barbeque or beer at any given moment. Several of my friends (Pete, Jim and Brad) had gone out and gotten a box of fireworks. I had the opertunity to see large boat prop spinning balls of fire bounce off their neighbors roof just missing the older people on their patio as well as roman candles jammed into PVC pipes completely melting the plastic and turning a makeshift driveway marker into a glowing pile of plastic. I had just bought a Sony Cybershot T-1 which had a fireworks mode. The following was captured using just the camera. The music is Manson. Enjoy.

F3600 Classic: Jimmy One night Drew and I went to the cafe. As is our custom we got coffee and tea and started a game of dominoes. Often, when we play at the cafe, strangers join our game and play for a while. On this occasion a man named Jimmy joined us. I managed to capture it on a very shitty camera. I put it to Johnny Cash's rendetion of NINs Hurt. I think it came out quite well.

F3600 Classic: iFly Several summers ago I made plans to visit my buddy Zach out in South Dakota. I had planned to drive, but an intern at my former employer was a pilot. He was part of a co-op that had several planes and he offered to fly me for just the cost of airplane fuel. This averaged out to be more than driving, however, it was well worth the experience. I brought my camcorder and made a short film about it.

F3600 Classic: fire One day during the summer of 2003, I was heading home from work. Traffic backed up as I crossed the Marshall/Lake street bridge connecting North St. Paul and South Minneapolis. Fire engines were putting out a blaze that had started the night before during a thunderstorm. West River Commons, which was nearing completion and was part of an effort to revitalized Lake Street was completely destroyed. Even after fire crews extenguished the inferno, the ashes smoldered for weeks. On a positive note, they immediately went back to work and rebuilt it again. Today it's complete with residential apartments, a papa murphys and dunn brothers.
